The Hornet basketball team has been hard at work putting together a good non-district season and getting ready for a good district push. To start the Christmas break the Hornets fell Roosevelt in a game which the Riders has a strong finish to pull away from the Hornets 75-70.
It was then off to the Hays Rebel Classic tournament. The Hornets opened play with a defeat of Leander Rouse HS 70-63 on day 1 and opened day 2 with a win over Edinburg Vela HS 71-59. Falling short in their next two the Hornets were defeated by Coppers Cover and Cedar Ridge. However, the Hornets corrected some things and were able to close out the tournament with a win over Fort Bend Clements 80-49.
Their next action was opening up district play with a nail bitter vs.the San Marcos Rattlers Friday Jan 3rd. Falling short by a final score of 76-78 the Hornets were lead by Diego Mendoza 25pts, Jonathan Ochoa 22pts and Tvonsi Hubbard 17pts to go along with a few big offensive and defensive rebounds..
This last Tuesday the Hornets team bounced back with a gut checking performance versus the New Braunfels Unicorns who brought in a record of 19-4 and 1-0 in district. The 61-57 victory came by way of big play from Austin Jimenez, T’vonsi Hubbard, Diego Mendez, and Jonathan Ochoa. The key defining moment in the 4th occurred with less than 2 minutes to go in the game when Diego Mendez took a charge that negated a score that would have closed the lead down to 3. The Hornets will look to continue the momentum as they prepare for the Smithson Valley Rangers on Friday Jan. 10th at SV.
