Boys Varsity Baseball · Baseball Secures District Title

Tuesday evening the Hornets made the short drive to San Marcos to take on the Rattlers in what would be the District 26-6A season finale. The Hornets scratched a run in the top of the first inning with a leadoff double from Taylor Neil, followed by a single from Damion Gonzales and an RBI sacrifice fly from Tyler Vivier. East Central’s offense was quiet until scratching another run in the top of the fourth when Logan Taylor ledoff the inning with a double, followed up by an Alex Prado single and a 2-out RBI single from Taylor Neil. For 5 2/3 innings junior Matthew Luna was baseball perfection. He was able to shut down the Rattler offense not allowing any baserunners. The Rattlers did not find themselves on base until the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs which is also when they were able to manufacture a run of their own. In the top of the seventh inning the Hornets would answer with two runs of their own. Senior John LaFleur got hit by a pitch to give the Hornets a lead off base runner and with three singles in the inning from Damion Gonzales, Nevan Smith and Robert Sierra the Hornets were able to push two more runs across. With Luna on the mound last night, four runs was enough to win the ball game. Luna would finish the game on the mound, picking up his 100 strikeout on the year along the way. The final score was 4-1 with the East Central Hornets being victorious. The win improved the Hornets to 23-7-1 (12-2) on the year.
