Hornets News · Boys Basketball Teams Open Up District By Defeating San Marcos

Your EC boys basketball team once again swept the competition.

The night started with the freshman Black team getting into what seemed to be a competitive game with many turnovers.  The first half would be the San Marcos way of slowing you down and making the game stay within their grasp for a big spurt at the end.  But after a good motivating halftime pep talk the Black team came out and would press the Rattlers and go on several big runs that would lead to a big 72-43 EC victory.
The Freshman Gold team would come out sluggish as San Marcos slowed the tempo down and caused the boys to miss jump shots and layups that would drop. They would also have a low scoring first half that seemed to be filled with penalty’s and mistakes.  The boys responded in the second when they ran several different presses that lead to 12 unanswered points.  The boys would hold on to a defensive that would be defined by out rounding the Rattlers to win 39-31.

The JV Boys once again unleashed their energy unloading on the Rattler with a big start in the first and would never look back or be threaten.  They continue to look like a force to be reckoned with, with one goal in mind(relentless 94/32 hard work) our program’s mindset for the season.  They would just dominate and and play great team ball and runaway with an 88-58 victory that could have easily hit the 100’s.
The Varsity boys district opener was exactly what Coach Rabon and the staff were counting on.  A San Marcos team that would try to slow down the pace and make our uptempo offense and aggressive defensive pressure bog down and be a grueling game scoring in the 50’s.  The game would seem to favor that outcome with a slow start for the Hornets with San Marcos bringing the pace to a turtles crawl.  Our boys would miss several shots as the half would end with a 38-39 score.   After a sluggish first half with to many rushed shots and uncharacteristic mistakes. The boys would come out of the locker room with and explosive 3rd and 4th periods of 26 in each quarter led by Junior Jonathan Ochoa with 26 points for the game.  The team would utilizes defensive angles to help cut off any drives that the Rattlers attempted  to make.  Coach Rabon and the staff would determine that our boys could man to man full court pressure the Rattlers and get an advantage that we needed.  The move would pay off as your EC Hornets would out score the Rattlers 52 to 27 in the 2nd half.  The boys played a fast paced, drive and kick concept that broke down any zones San Marcos kept trying to get into and allowed EC to play EC basketball.  Help side defense and crashing the boards by all of our players help close out the Rattlers and give the East Central Hornets a 1-0 district start to the season.  The boys will travel to take on the New Braunfels Unicorns this Friday.
